What is a root canal?

Devitalization (or endodontic treatment) involves removing infected or necrotic dental pulp from inside the tooth, disinfecting the root canals and sealing them. The aim is to preserve the natural tooth and eliminate the infection, thus avoiding extraction. The tooth remains in place and regains its normal function.

Is root canal surgery painful?

Thanks to the local anaesthetic, endodontic treatment is painless. Some patients experience a slight sensitivity in the days following the procedure, which is easily managed with standard painkillers. Contrary to popular belief, root canal therapy relieves the pain associated with infection, rather than creating it.

How many sessions are needed for a root canal?

Endodontic treatment generally involves 1 or 2 sessions, depending on the complexity of the case (number of canals, presence of active infection). Single-rooted teeth (incisors, canines) are treated in one session, while molars, which have several canals, may require two sessions. A protective crown is often fitted afterwards.

Is it possible to keep a root canal for the rest of your life?
