A dental implant is an artificial titanium root screwed into the jawbone, to which a ceramic crown is attached. It replaces a missing tooth in a durable and natural way, without affecting neighbouring teeth. The result is aesthetic and functional, and the implant can last for several decades with proper maintenance.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and is generally well tolerated. Most patients report mild after-effects (slight sensitivity, moderate swelling) for 2 to 5 days. At Remi Dental, Dr Julien Kaikati follows a precise protocol to minimise discomfort before, during and after surgery.
The complete treatment includes fitting the implant, followed by a period of osseointegration (fusion of the implant with the bone) lasting 3 to 6 months, followed by fitting of the final crown. In total, the process takes between 4 and 8 months, depending on the case. In certain situations, a temporary crown can be placed on the same day.
A properly fitted and maintained implant can last a lifetime. Clinical studies show success rates of over 95% after 10 years. The key is regular dental check-ups and rigorous hygiene. The crown (the visible part) may need replacing after 15 to 20 years, depending on wear.
In Belgium, dental implants are partially reimbursed in certain cases (total edentulism, specific pathologies). For the majority of common cases, reimbursement remains limited.
